Is this poison ivy? There's no itch?

My son has red areas and blisters on his hand and nose. The doctor said he likely got poison ivy on his hand and then rubbed his nose. The thing is - it is NOT itchy. Isn't poison ivy supposed to be itchy? Could it be something else? He is using presciption cream and it's healing so I'm just curious as to whether it really is poison ivy or something else. Thanks!

Although itch is a common symptom, everyone reacts differently. So it is likely poison ivy or a reaction caused by contact with something similar.

The skin rash is caused by a sap known as urushiol that is excreted from the plant. The sap causes an allergic skin reaction in many people, although not everyone reacts to the sap. Estimates are that up to 30% of people do not react to the sap from these poisonous plants.

Reply:Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac are all severe allergens that cause rash and usually severe itching. It sounds like the boy touched something not as bad but still it caused him to have an allergic reaction.

Dont encourage him to think he wont suffer with poison ivy because in the furture he may ignore it and suffer terribly.
