Can I get poison ivy (or whatever its called) if I touch someone who has it?

My sister has a weird sort of rash, that looks sort of like poison ivy (or whatever its called! lol feel free to correct me on this). I've touched her rash, rubbing anti-itch cream on it. If it was poison ivy would I get it from touching her rash?

Can I get poison ivy (or whatever its called) if I touch someone who has it?
If you are allergic to it, too, you might. I get it from my husband's clothes when he has been working in the yard.

I'm highly susceptible to it, and the oil from the plant gets on his clothes. It can stay for over a year on clothng that hasn't been washed or drycleaned. And he has spread it to our kids when he isn't careful about washing his hands thoroughly or changing his clothes before coming in contact with us.

He is not allergic. I keep a box of vinyl exam gloves so I can touch things that might have poison ivy on them.
Reply:well sweet heart yes u can get poison ivy if u tush some 1 that has it becuz poison ivy is contagious and u may not wanna touch the person who has it for about 1 or 2 weeks just until u no it is gone
Reply:It's possible. If you have to do that again, just make sure you wash your hands really well after.
Reply:My boyfriend just got poison ivy a few days ago. He has been concerned that he would give it to me. I am one of the few that is not allergic to the oil of poison ivy. You can not get it from touching your sisters rash. It is not contagious. You can get it if you touch something that still has the oils. So if you touch whatever she was wearing when she got it and that item has not been washed, then you can get it. Make sure that everything she was wearing gets cleaned otherwise she may get poison ivy again. Including her shoes. I think rubbing alcohol will disinfect the shoes, not sure. I've listed a site so you can read for yourself. And by the way when in doubt ask a medical professional they will give you the right information, including what will help the rash.

I hope this helps.

Any advice for poison ivy?

Ok, let me just first say that I never in my entire life had poison ivy. Now, five days before heading off to college, it hits me like a ton of bricks.

Now it didnt start appearing until maybe three days after I had been anywhere near what could have been poison ivy. Started itching two very discrete spots and now, a week later, its all down both arms, around my neck and chest, on my ears, face, and knees. I am now taking a steroid for it and still applying cream but for some reason it appears to keep spreading and I dont know why because I control my scratching and Im taking the medicine.

So does anyone know some solid advice as to how I can stop it from spreading other than the obvious (dont scratch it)?

Thanks

Any advice for poison ivy?
Try using a towel or washcloth soaked in either plain tap water or Burow's Solution (an astringent solution -- you can make it yourself using Domeboro tablets or powder packets available over-the-counter). This can help relieve the intense itching and remove dry crust that has formed as a result of the rash.

A fan blowing over the cool compress will diminish some of the heat of the itching and help to dry up some of the ooze coming from the rash. As the skin is cooling, the blood vessels compress and that cuts down on the itching and the new ooze.

Some dermatologists recommend rubbing an ice cube gently over the rash several times a day, then letting the skin air-dry.

Soaking in a tub, particularly using an oatmeal bath such as Aveeno, can also be very soothing to the itch. Be sure the bath is cool or lukewarm -- but not hot -- as heat tends to make the rash even more inflamed.

After the cooling treatment (using any of the forms mentioned above), coat the rash with a shake lotion such as calamine. This continues to relieve the itching and helps to dry up the blisters.

Be sure to check the expiration date on an old calamine bottle in your medicine cabinet, since it may not be effective after the expiration date. Be sure the shake lotion does not contain benzocaine, zirconium, or a topical antihistamine, such as Benadryl. These can actually make the rash worse by producing their own allergic reactions when applied to already sensitive skin.

Applying hydrocortisone or another topical corticosteroid will help suppress the itching and give temporary relief, but does little to hasten the drying up of the rash.

Taking an oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl, can help with the itching quite a bit, although it does not speed up resolution of the rash. Taking benadryl at nighttime will make most people drowsy and help them sleep through the night without itching.

Don't use Benadryl cream or spray topically too much, because this can cause its own reaction.

In severe cases of poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac, it is a good idea to see a doctor. Sometimes large blisters need to be drained, and sometimes an oral steroid such as prednisone may be useful. Occasionally, even a steroid injection is needed.

And%26gt;

Systemic steroids produce rapid resolution of both the itching and the rash. If they are needed, a gradually tapering dosage over about 12 days should be given. The dosage needs to be tapered to avoid side effects after discontinuing use, and the entire course should be taken since stopping earlier may result in a rebound rash as bad as the original. I hope this info helps, good luck
Reply:use calamine lotion...also their is a shot you can get from the doctors now that will help keep poison ivy down....it is usually given to people that are really bothered with poison ivy a lot...my ex mother- in law use to get the shots in the summer...but calamine lotion is the best and maybe getting some benadryl for itching....
Reply:keep appling the cream but in between cream treatment or right after a bath, gently bath area with distilled white vinigar. may burn some but it starts killing the virus

Reply:You're taking the steroid orally right? If you go and get a shot of cortisone that will be a HUGE relief. But it is very painful. Also, taking a bath with oatmeal (like you do for chicken pox) will help relieve the itching.
Reply:If it's spreading, it's not poison. The only way it would continue "spread" if it were poison is if you were still coming in to contact with it.

That means it's probably something else...perhaps impetigo from scratching. This is caused by staph or strep bacteria, and presents with vesicles, pustules and a yellowish crust that itches terribly.

Get back to the doctor and have them check it out.
Reply:get back to Dr, quick as you can. it sounds like something else ,not poison ivy, in any case medication isn't working.

if it was poison ivy you would have the rash almost instantly after touching it.if it was poison ivy, the only way it could spread would be for you to scratch and touch wherever you are breaking out now, don't wait, get to Dr at once,
Reply:aveno oatmeal bath it works pretty good for itching and to keep from spreading. You can also just put oatmeal in like cheese cloth and use in your bath. Also they have a product just for poisen ivy or oak at your local health food store that helps.
Reply:I have always been told to put a little bit of bleach on a wash clothe and dab it on the rash. It burns like crazy but it will dry it up fast. But, I'm really not sure how healthy it is, all of my family did it and they are fine.

The only way poison oak/ivy/sumac can "spread" is by repeated contact with something that has the active agent (urishiol) on it. This could be a garden tool of some sort, shoes, a jacket or other article of clothing, or you may be re-exposing yourself by frequenting some area where the plants are present or left behind some residue and maybe you don't realize it. The bad news is your case sounds like a typical one and you're going to be suffering for just about 2 weeks from date of contact (i.e. last contact more than likely if you are being repeatedly exposed). It sounds like you're having the sort of "systemic" attack that I've had before, usually when I "bushwhaked" in, around, or after traversing an area that had poison oak/ivy/sumac. By doing so any oil that got on my skin or clothes caused me to get "innoculated" when I got scratched by a bush and then (I've deduced, but never confirmed with an "expert") the stuff ended up in my blood, which causes me to have spreading something like you describe most likely as my circulatory system takes the agent all around my body and I have a general allergic reaction to the agent. But I live %26amp; hike/mountain bike in areas that are FULL of poison oak/sumac and I've managed to stay free from any outbreaks (last possible contact 2 days ago) for 2-3 years now. How? I read that urishiol is WATER SOLUABLE so whenever I even think I might have had the slightest contact with this substance I douse myself with water IMMEDIATELY. It's worked so far... keeping my fingers crossed.
Reply:Pl. continue with medicines for a week. If it doesn't work then it isn't poison but the case of internal heat imbalance. Either you go to a Su - Jok acupuncturist preferably or a traditional one. If nobody is there you can visit us.

Boyfriend gave me poison ivy?

my boyfriend was working outside and the next day he came home from work and told me he had poison ivy. I immediately checked myself for it, and sure enough I had tiny red bumps in a few places. Now, a few days later he still just has tiny red bumps, but my spots have turned huge, and really red and swollen. This is the second time we've each had poison ivy together.Last time was the same thing, mine looked worse then too. I wish he would learn what the plant looked like so he would stay out of it. My question is why does my rash always turn out worse than his? He is always scratching and I hardly ever scratch.

Boyfriend gave me poison ivy?
My boyfriend actually just got over a horrible case of poison ivy. Luckily I never got it. He went to the doctor and the doctor told him that it is an allergy, so maybe you are just more allergic to it than your boyfriend. Go to a drug store, get some benadryl pills, and there is also benadryl spray and gel that is meant specifically for poison ivy or oak that you put directly on it, that way you are fighting it from the inside and the outside. The gel and spray will also help dry up the rash so it won't itch as bad. Good luck!
Reply:your body reacts differently to the poison ivy than his does. You have to remember that he may get it so much his body is use to the infection ontop of the skin that it does not have to work hard to fight it. Your body on the other hand may have to work hard to fight off the infection. Try putting some Gold Bold Medicated Cream on it, it may take some of the swelling and pain away.

Hope this helps!
Reply:You're probably allergic to it. Poison Ivy doesn't affect everyone in the same way. Some people are immune, some people can end up in the hospital from a single leaf brushing them while hiking.
Reply:people will have all kinds of differing reactions to the poison Ivy oil... when I was a kid... it seamed like all I had to do to get it... was just walk by the plant. My older brother could sleep in it and he would never react... go figure. My worst experience is I would be out in the woods and then would have to go to the bathroom... and got it on my private parts.... talk about itch. If it get too unbareable got to doctor for shot of steriod it will dry up in a few days.
Reply:Everyone is different. For some, the allergic reaction is worse than others. Its like asking why in spring some people are taking allergy pills day and night and others might be fine with one pill.

Now coming to what you can do about it.

(this is from the best of my knowledge, and i'm not a doctor yet but almost there)

When you see the tiny red bumps, go buy yourself allergy medication. Which ones? any seasonal allergy (though most of them dont work) try using zyrtec or reactine (both are same depend on where you live).

other thing you can try is after bite (for insects)

In summery, All you need is something that has antihistamine.

Before you want to waste any money on any medication i suggested make sure with your doctor for pharmacist.

How to stop poison ivy oozying?

I noticed the poison Ivy I recieved a week ago, Sunday January 13th. The rash started between only 2 of my fingers in a small nickel size area. Its' only spread has been to a tiny rash inbetween my fingers next to the original rash.

I'm new to poison Ivy and without doing research I thought I would pop and drain the blistors. The itching stopped once I popped them but now they won't stop oozing. I'v tried applying calomine plus and technu but everything I apply just gets washed off by the ooze from the blistors. I put on a bandaid and within 10 minutes, it's completely soaked through. It has been like this for 2 or 3 days now. There is some redness to the rash and it does look like it is scarring. It is also sore to touch and it's sore when I move my fingers. I contacted my doctor and they're sending me a prescription, i'm not sure what but I pick it up today. If this prescription is a cream or lotion though then I'm worried that it'll just be washed off by the ooze.

How to stop poison ivy oozying?
I've heard an oatmeal bath helps with poison ivy. Hope this helps.
Reply:Please go see your doctor!!! If it is oozing that bad you probably need antibiotics. Hope this helps
Reply:The ooze blisters weep is trying to wash away the poison and is full of white blood cells to combat infection due to the open wounds. I have heard that the water in poison ivy blisters can transfer poison ivy to unaffected parts so be careful not to spread it around. I apply Vitamin E to burns and weepy sores. It is soothing and helps my skin heal without scarring.

Vitamin E is good on fingers, knuckles and places that bend %26amp; flex because it keeps newly forming skin soft and flexible. Get the oily kind and stick a pin in the tip of a capsule. Apply liberally and reapply as needed. You might wrap loosely with sterile gauze and wear a disposable glove on that hand to protect both the sores and your surroundings.

Beware if increasing pain %26amp; redness starts creeping away from the sores and up your hand or arm--an indication of blood poisoning, meaning you should seek medical attention immediately.
Reply:Your condition may lead to severe scarring if not taken care of immediately. For this reason, do not hesitate to see a doctor .

Do I have poison ivy?

after working in the yard over the weekend I got a few little red bumps on my wrist and a few on my arm. After about a day or two they turned into blister looking bumps (almost like poison ivy) It itches really bad, so I have been scratching a little. it hasn't spread any thgouh. I live in north east texas and I am 20. I use to get poison ivy really bad a long time ago, but that was like when I was 12 and I havn't had it since. What else could it be?

Do I have poison ivy?
Sounds like poison ivy....Poison Ivy and other yard poisons can stay on gloves, clothes, shoes, and even tools for up to 2 years. Also people can get poison ivy from a neighbor burning it - by the smoke in the air. As we get older our bodies change about every 5-7 years.... some can be or not be allergic to things from years of the past.

The best cure around for any yard leaf poisons. Get a bar of Burt's Bees poison Ivy soap (about $5) and a tube of Zanfel 30 second relief (this is about $20 but a Little goes along way and it works fast) Both can be found at most drug stores. You may have to ask over the counter for the Zanfel. I use them both together as many as 3 times a day.

I have had some very very bad reactions to poison ivy and this has totally cured me in 30 seconds - 2 days max depending on how bad my reaction was. With my bad reactions Instant relief of 80% cure the first day - then used the extra days is to make sure the poisons were all gone. Ivarest is the best brand of the pink anti itch cream because it has an extra ingredient and last 8 hours- great for going to work all day and having your clothes rubbing you and reminding you of those itchy times.

When working in the yard I have learned to wear latex, plastic, or pleather type gloves. I wash my hands before taking off the gloves then put away or dispose of the gloves. I then wash my hands again.

All clothes go right into the wash and shoes get rinsed and air dried. ( also taking a mild antihistamine will help too)

Best of luck to you - I know how it must feel.
Reply:i think it is poison ivy,or it could be heat rash, either way put some aloe vera on it,and it should help you. :o)
Reply:could be poison ivy, could be an allergic reaction to something else. At any rate try not to scratch and get yourself some calamine lotion. I hear pink spots on your skin is the in thing this summer :)
Reply:It sounds like it to me! I use to get it every summer as a kid and stayed poison ivy free for about 10 yrs. until this spring. I forgot how miserable it is. I did lots of research on things to do to help relieve the itch and found that vix vapor rub really takes the itch out!
Reply:its poison ivy. Go to the drug store and buy some of that Calamine lotion, and in the future, 3 leaves leave it be. There is some rhyme. I cannot remember how it goes though. Feel better.
Reply:Poison ivy does not spread although it seems like you have it (or poison oak, sumac) Sometimes it appears to spread because some areas develop later than others.

A product called Ivy Dry helped me

Also be aware that the oils in poison ivy can be active for over a year or more. i.e. you stepped on poison ivy with your shoe. If you touch your shoe 6 months from now you could get it again. Use gloves and wipe down the shoes and anything else that may have been exposed. Washing clothes will handle that
Reply:It really sounds like poison ivy to me. I grew up in the northeast where poison ivy is everywhere but I used to only get it very mildly compared to most. When I got it, it was small blister like bumps that itched like crazy. Mine never really spread but I was careful about scratching.

Help with poison ivy?
If you know you had contact with one of the plants, immediately wash areas of the skin that may have touched the plant. Sometimes the rash can be completely avoided by washing the affected areas with plenty of water within 10 or 15 minutes of contact. However, most people have up to 4 hours to wash the plant oil off before a reaction occurs. 2 Clothing should also be thoroughly washed immediately. Contaminated surfaces should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol.

To relieve itching and help blisters dry out, apply wet compresses or soak the area in cool water. Antihistamine pills or calamine lotion may help relieve symptoms.

To prevent infection, try not to scratch the rash and cut your fingernails short to minimize the possibility of opening the skin and spreading bacteria.

_______________________________

Antihistamine pills such as diphenhydramine hydrochloride (nonprescription: for example, Benadryl) or hydroxyzine hydrochloride (prescription: for example, Atarax, Rezine) help relieve itching and dry blisters.

Corticosteroid pills may be used to treat a moderate or severe rash. These prescription medications help improve or clear up the rash more quickly. Prescription corticosteroid creams, ointments, shots, or gels may also be used, but pills are usually more effective.

Barrier creams and lotions help prevent the plant oil (urushiol) from coming in contact with the skin or reduce the severity of a reaction. These creams vary in their potency and are not always effective.

You may be able to use a product that dissolves urushiol, such as Tecnu Poison Oak-N-Ivy Cleanser, an organic solvent. These products may reduce the severity of your reaction if used up to 48 hours after exposure.

The most common complication of poison ivy, oak, or sumac rash is a secondary infection, usually caused by scratching. When this occurs, your health professional will probably prescribe a type of topical antibiotic cream if the infection is in a small area. Otherwise, you may need systemic antibiotics, given by injection or prescription pills. 1

What To Think About

The following medications should not be used for poison ivy, oak, or sumac rash, because they can cause allergy problems of their own:

Antihistamines applied to the skin (such as Benadryl cream, spray, or gel; Dermamycin)

Anesthetics applied to the skin containing benzocaine (such as Americaine, Anacaine, Lanacane, Bicozene)

Antibiotics containing neomycin sulfate (such as Neosporin, Neo-Rx, Mycifradin, Poly-Pred)

Reply:cold compresses will help the itch, but the oozing you need calamine lotion for that (hope i spelled that right) It will dry up some of the ooze you are talking about
Reply:Have you tried using talcum powder? Anything that has a steroid base should help to clear it up, too.
Reply:I use Ivy Dry. It stinks, but nothing works better.
Reply:calamine lotion works really well it is a pink lotion put it all over and it will dry the pus
Reply:camameal cream in the pink bottle is the best stuff in the world, and to help with the itcky even more take some over the counter Benadryl to help fight the itcky from the inside.

Also there is a bath treatment with oatmeal, not the kind you eat, it comes in little packs and you just soak in the warm tub, with a wash rag on your face. this will help I have done this method for a long time my son somehow find the oak every year,
Reply:Honestly, it sounds like you are doing what needs to be done. If you were to go to a medical clinic, they offer discounts for uninsured people. Call and ask the price. They would give you a corticosteroid to take orally for a few days, they work pretty fast, and well. Otherwise, ride it out. I wouldn't use adhesive, use gauze fluffs and tape gauze to gauze. Don't itch, and wash your hands before and after you use the toilet. You don't want to experience that rash in the delicate regions!! FYI future exposure-burning poison ivy can leave you to inhale the bad stuff, and you can get the rash orally and in the respiratory system, also all over your body. Take care to protect yourself!!
Reply:Okay, sounds like it is becoming infected. You really have to be careful because this infection posions the blood and then it can turn into infatiga and rumatic fever.

Take oatmeal and get it wet and use as a poultice (compress) on the areas. You can also put it in the tub loose, but don't soak for more than 20 mins. Use quacker rolled oats.

Go to health store and purchase Tea Tree Lotion. This is antibiotic, antiimflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial. Now I know they are going to try to get you to use something else, but trust me on this one. My husband and best friend are highly allergic and both have had the other two things I mentioned b/c it became such a state. The tea tree will kill it immediately and dry it up and heal it.

You need to take benedril if you can, this will help fight it internally and keep you comfortable from itching.

The tea tree will keep the discomfort away too. Try to stay out of the sun if possible and any where that is hot, this only irritates it more.

If you lack being able to find the Tea Tree lotion go to www.dandesoap.com, she carries the lotion and soap and the cost is less than $10. You need to keep this on hand always. If you have been working around it, you can wash with the soap and apply the lotion and the mess will not even take hold. You poor thing...My husband has suffered so many times until I got this for him and now we do our yard worry free.

PS: Drink Chamomile tea and you can cleanse the areas with it. It fights infection, takes away the pain and helps speed healing too. You can drink it to desensitize the nerves and take down inflammation and help you to sleep restfully.

Best to you.
Reply:You do know what to DO with the oatmeal, right? It's not just for eating... you make a paste of it and put it on all the affected areas, and then sit and wait for it to dry - completely - before scraping it off, and repeating.

Poison ivy affects the body through an oil. The oil is spread over the skin by our own sweat, and is very difficult to break down. I would probably use then dish soap for the oil, and then alcohol for the infection, and it would hurt a lot for a couple of minutes, but at least it wouldn't be spreading any further.

If it spreads into your eye, you could go blind. It might be worth going to see a doctor. If you won't do that, then you definitely need to get it under control.
Reply:All the above are great ideas. The oatmeal bath is called Aveeno Oatmeal Bath. When you take a bath, try to make the water cool because the hotter the water is the worse it itches. You can get it at wal-mart or any other store. The caladryl clear works good as well as the pink stuff. Also the benadryl is good advice. I had it so bad once I had to get a cordisone shot and it still took 2 weeks doing the baths and the cover up stuff before it went away. As long as you have washed the clothes you wore when you got it, you are not contagious and it takes a few days to stop spreading. Good Luck!
Reply:KEEP THIS AWAY FROM EYES!! make a mixture of 1/3rd bleach %26amp; 2/3rds water ; dab on area a few times a day, any Raw areas will burn like hell. but this will dry it all up in a short period of time. my friend is extreeemly alergic to ivy%26amp;oak yet he still goes hunting every year and he always carries some with him.
Reply:If you cut an orange in half and rub the juice side on the rash, the citrus will dry up the ooze. Of course, you will have to repeat the application a number of times. Try this before bed so you won't be touching it. Natural remedies are best. There are no side effects or long term body damage like prescription drugs. You might also want to wash your hands as many times a day as you can to keep from spreading it to other areas. Change your towels or use paper to dry. After a shower, wash your towel every time. The stuff spreads like wild fire and is very contageous.

How to keep poison ivy from itching?

How to keep poison ivy from itching?

I want to go to bed and i get poison ivy bad when i get it and it itches really bad and i used all the calamine lotion and the benadryl stuff i have for it doesnt really work so what should i do

How to keep poison ivy from itching?
I really suggest Ivy Rid....this spray is fabulous! However, if your itching is that bad, you might want to see your doctor for a course of steriod medication.

There are several other things you can try:

oatmeal baths (buy Aveeno at your drug store and follow directions)

hydrocortisone cream - will reduce itching

aluminum acetate soaks (buy Domeboro solution at your drug store) - will dry the rash

antihistamines (buy at your drug store such as benadryl) - will reduce itching

If you cannot get the itching under control, you see signs of infection (fever, pus, pain, foul odor) or the rash is affecting your face, lips, eyes, or genitals, see a doctor immediately.

Home Remedy for Poison Ivy?

Our family just moved to Thomasville GA from Miami and found our property filled with Poison Ivy. Befor ewe get into our weeding...is there a home remedy for controlling poison ivy and the itching it will bring?

Home Remedy for Poison Ivy?
Anything good for acne helps poision ivy. There are many good over-the-counter treatments now, but the best thing is the prescription stuff. You will have to see the doctor to get it, and if the rash is real bad, then steroid pills and/or shots.

Use lots of soap on it, a lye soap or something harsh. Wash often and scrub good. Don't use hot water, use cool. Also can put ice or cool on it when it is itching.

Avoid exposure as much as possible, there's an over the counter protectant being sold now. Drier skin soaks up the poison which is an oil (Urushiol), so if you have a sunscreen or bug repellant, use an oily one. When exposed, you have 3 (THREE) minutes to wash it off or you'll get the itch! So I take a bottle of dish or liquid soap and some water with me. After 3 minutes, you still need to wash, it will help and also stop the spread. Alcohol can also wash the poison off, but will leave skin extra dry so only use if you won't be re-exposed.

Animals carry the oil on their fur, but I've heard they never get the itchy rash. Tools will carry the poison, I've read it will last as long as 5 years! Wash clothes in hot water and rinse well. Wash chairs, shoes, everything that might have oil on it. Some of that maybe use alcohol on.

How are you going to get rid of it on your property?

I read recently that poison ivy loves extra carbon dioxide and pollution plus global warming is causing the plants to take over and spread like crazy. They said it was also having a stronger poison and causing worse rashes.

To weed, here's a trick-put a plastic bag over your hand and up your arm. Grab the weed, pull and cover with the bag, without ever touching it. (Doesn't work if it's too big.) Also goats, they will eat it all!

Live well and do good.
Reply:Soak in bathtub of oatmeal!

Ivy along side of new house is it poison ivy?

There is ivy running along the north side of the house. It has three leafs and little pads that look like suckers or something holding it to the house. It's very pretty but am unaware if it's poison Ivy or not? Tall approx. 8-9 feet and spreads from side to side on the house. Leafs are a light green/brown color. Vine is dark brown and those pads are also a dark brown.

I hope these pictures help.

2) english ivy

Poisonous:

3) poison ivy

4) poison oak

5) poison sumac
Reply:Three leaves on a stem and shiny small leaves? Poison ivy Larger leaves, darker green color and shiny? Poison oak.

One of the give away signs is the shiny composition of the leaf. Of course, if you're not sure - touch a leaf and waiti for a couple of hours. If you break out in an itchy rash - yup, that's it.
Reply:what is the shape of the leaf?

you better compare it to pics online or in a book. Tons of pics on the net. If the pervious owner left it there I doubt it is poison ivy, but better to be safe then sorry.

Because it's an oil, it sticks to just about everything it touches. That's why you need to wash everything you were wearing when you got infected in the hottest water possible.

Reply:Yes, even pets that roll in poison ivy can get some oil on their fur. Soap or detergent and water removes it, though (but use rubber gloves when washing stuff if you're particularly allergic to urushiol).
Reply:Yes! Wash them as SOON as possible. If you end up getting it, I suggest getting the shot.

I just recovered from my first case of it. I went to the doctor and got the shot, and it cleared up totally within 2 days (versus 14 days). My brother gets it badly and says the shot works wonders.

Putting blench on poison ivy?

Is this a good idea? cause i just did it and nothing seem to happen.. just burned alittle nothing bad... but i still have the poison ivy

should i scratch my poison ivy and then put blench on it? so its open?

i put some blench on a cotton ball and rubbed it in...

Putting blench on poison ivy?
the appropriate treatment for that exposure is soap and water washing. If it reacts, then use Caladryl topically and benadryl orally.
Reply:NO
Reply:wooo ok i just did the same thing Noo dont scratch it open and do it. just apply once liberaly and wait a day or so the itching will stop today but the bumps will stay for maybe another 2
Reply:If it doesn't seem to get better and starts spreading you may have to go to a Dr. and get a shot to clear it up.

Never scratch it because the liquid in the blisters will make it spread to other parts of the body, even just touching it sometimes. Wash hands. The caladryll and benedryll are good things to put on it to dry it up. Will take a few days if it even works. Good Luck. NO BLEACH please, that is for laundry!!
Reply:I have no idea what blench is...but if it's anything like bleach, you don't want it on your skin. Ever.

Scratching poison ivy only helps it to spread. Stop scratching.

It will usually subside on it's own, but you can help it along by either applying pramoxine (Caladryl) topically or diphenhydramine (Benadryl) topically and/or orally.

Also, be sure to wash the site thoroughly.
Reply:no... u put egg white o it and that dries up ur poison ivy... just crack and egg on a plate and the dip your fingers in it and rub it on the infected area.

Could this be poison ivy? Burned wood in fire pit...?

Last night I burned wood in my fire pit. The wood is near some poison ivy in my yard (approx 1' away from what I can see), I didn't touch it, I used tools to carry it. While burning I was pretty close to the fire since it was cold last night. This morning when I woke up my face didn't feel right, kind of dry and tight, my cheek bones looked red/pink almost as if I had put blush on and looked puffier than normal :). Throughout the day I noticed the texture of my face was almost rough. Almost like little bumps, however it was not noticeable to my coworkers. It's felt more than it's seen. I went to my doctor and I think I got little help there. He gave me an antihistamine, and if that didn't work a script for steroids. He says I may have had a reaction to the smoke/heat (?!). He said if I develop a rash in the next few days to use the steroids but from previous experience with poison ivy, oak, etc. I usually have a serious problem within 48hrs, not 4 days. + My bday is Sunday! I'm afraid

Could this be poison ivy? Burned wood in fire pit...?
It sounds like it might be poison ivy. The oils of poison ivy that irritate your skin can travel through the air when the plant is burned. That happened to me once at a bonfire and it was one of the worst cases of poison ivy I've ever had. I suggest taking prednisone as soon as possible to possibly decrease the amount the poison ivy develops. Though it might just be heat rash, I'm not sure, but from experience I would guess that it's poison ivy.

HELP I have poison Ivy!?

Ok I got poison ivy about 8 months ago, and it was horrible, it took me about a month for it to clear up. Now 6 hours ago, I put on the shirt I last had on when I had poison ivy, it was washed, and has sat in my closet all this time. I just noticed that there are spots appearing on my neck, someone help me please!

HELP I have poison Ivy!?
There is an oil called urushiol in this plant. It is the substance that you may be having a reaction to. I would recommend seeing your personal physician because he can give you a prescription for a round of steroids that will help you get over the itch and rash more quickly than calamine, or other topical remedies.

Meanwhile the site below has links that will answer almost any question on poison ivy. It is the Poison Ivy, Oak, %26amp; Sumac Information Center.
Reply:You want one of us to come over and put that lotion on you?
Reply:wash your neck good but dont srach make shur you dont wash it to hard or it could spred
Reply:Take a bath with some baking soda Quick! Then put on some calimine lotion on the spots ,heavy until it dries .If you have some Benadryl take it for the itching!!!!!!!!!
Reply:6 hours ago is kind of a long time for the "First-step" treatments, but you're supposed to rinse the area off with cool water (well, take off the shirt first, obviously),then wash it with soap and water, then cleanse the area with an alcohol swab. Though, you might wish to avoid that last part if the rash is getting serious, might prove rather painful.

Other than that, calamine lotion is supposed to be good for it, or anti-histamine medicines (i think... might wanna double check that one).

GUYS!!! help! poison ivy on genitalia??!?

my boyfriend went hunting 2 days ago, rubbed into poison ivy, ended up touching his face, and then eventually 'down below' when he went to pee. Not only is the rash covering half of his face...it is now bothering him in places it should never be. (half of his testicles, with a little on his penis.) It's driving him CRAZY as he can't stop scratching.... and he is driving ME CRAZY!!! he keeps complaining haha lol help us... what can he do? he's taking benedryl tonight and applying Ivy-Dry spray. help!!!! guys what did you do when you got this!?

oh and Happy new year! :-P

GUYS!!! help! poison ivy on genitalia??!?
oh man this has happend to me sooooooo many times. all of theise answers are serious.

1 do not under any circumstances scratch, itch, masturbate

(seriously) and dont have sex. i know its hard but dont do any of these.

2 sleep as much as possible (you wont knowtice it)

3 this might sound kinda weird, but put an ice pack on it, it will numb the poison ivy

4 keep it as dry as possible.

5 keep pluggin along with the ivy dry
Reply:Calamine lotion.

Cheap and works instantly.

BTW, I just have to say.....LOL!!
Reply:OUCH! Well, there is nothing else he can do.

This never happened to me, but he's doing the right thing so far, but make sure he doesn't scratch it
Reply:It's natures way of getting back at him for "hunting". Killing is not right....he should suffer the itches of hell!
Reply:Ouch that sucks! Sorry to say but he is going to have to just stop itching! :( Try reading these sites on how to treat it. Good luck, hope you don't get it.
Reply:u r doing everything u can...n also just so u no benadryl has this cream acting as an anti itch for skin....if it is still bothering him then go see a doc
Reply:have him apply Calamine Lotion.....it should help with the itchiness.
Reply:get to calling 911 and get to a hospital that sounds bad happy new years.
Reply:I find this pretty hard to believe, but whatever he has the answer is still the same. He needs to get to a doctor and get advice what to use.

I have seen poison ivy and there are probably lotions you can use, but it is pretty miserable in a normal place on your hands or arms....he still needs to find out what to use....and to be sure that is what the problem is...just in case it is something else. So tell him to see the doctor....think he needs more!
Reply:Double the Benadryl dose and keep putting the Ivy-Dry spray on or get some Calamine Lotion, that might work better. It is okay to double the Benadryl dose, I did it for an allergic reaction that I had and talked with a doctor and he said that doubling the dose for a short period of time is okay. You might also want to take a Tagamet anti-acid tablet, that also acts as a antihistamine.

I have a poison ivy rash. If I use anti-itch meds and don't scratch, how long can I expect the rash to last?

I was doing yard work three days ago and was around poison ivy. Though I didn't think much about it at the time, I now have the rash. The itching is minimal right now and I am using poison ivy meds that I got in the drug store. I just want to know how long it will last if I don't scratch it? And will it spread?

I have a poison ivy rash. If I use anti-itch meds and don't scratch, how long can I expect the rash to last?
It won't spread but you may have places where the oil was in contact with your skin that haven't reacted yet. The rash lasts about a week but it will get better everyday.

I am severly allergic to it - you arent but a great remedy is using something called Fells Naptha soap. It is an old-fasioned laundry detergent bar you can get at a lot of grocery stores, but it will dry the rash right up and it isn't dangerous.

Itching DOES NOT cause it to spread but it will break the blisters and can result in infection.
Reply:It depends on your body's ability to heal. Use calamine lotion to help dry it out and benadryl to help with the itching. It'll probably be around for a few days. Definitely DO NOT ITCH it as it will cause it to spread. If you do touch your skin in an affected area wash your hands thoroughly to avoid speading it elsewhere.
Reply:Depends on the individual. Usually lasts 7 days or so. For me, the OTC meds don't do much. I have to have the steroids to get over it.
Reply:About 14 days. It spreads. There is a wash available at the drug store, its expensive- about $29.00, that washes away the oil and speeds the healing process dramatically. I can't remember the product name, but the price will tell you if you're looking at the right stuff.
Reply:Yes, it will spread and you are better off going to the doctor and getting stronger meds for this. I had a friend that was also working in the yard and before she knew it she had it all over her. Everything you touch is spreading that stuff. And I know it is miserable. You could even check with your pharmacist. Some of the meds we buy over the counter are just treating the symptom and not taking care of the real issue. Hope this helps.
Reply:2 weeks, get some cortisone and pink lotion

How to kill poison ivy growing in a lilac bush??

Last year we had poison ivy growing in and around a lilac bush. We'd like to kill the poison ivy without killing the lilac bush. How can this be accomplished?

How to kill poison ivy growing in a lilac bush??
get some ortho TREE AND BUSH KILLER carefully spray on the leaves of the ivy. one week later, ivy dies wait till it dries and pull out by roots, (may have to wait longer , depending on thickness of ivy). ivy gone, lilac healthy. the deal is the tree killer is absorbed through the leaves of the ivy and kills the roots. i have done this to several of my holly bushes, and some other kind of bush that had regular, not waxy leaves and it worked great. if this fails take 10 gallons of gasoline apply liberly to entire area, lite and take pride in knowing the ivy from hell is gone. then replant with a new lilac.
Reply:You could possibly find where the root is for the poison ivy and spray that with a plant or weed killer as long as it isn't near the roots of the lilac bush. If it is then you might have to call a professional in to take care of it.
Reply:Go to a plant nursery and pick up a bottle of "TECNU Poison Oak-N-Ivy Cleanser." (I swear by this stuff.) Go to Home Depot and buy a hazmat (hazardous materials) suit. It is a relatively cheap, thin white suit that you slip on over your clothes and it will save you all kinds of pain if it prevents you from coming into contact with the poison ivy.

Put the tecnu, a bucket of hot soapy water, a hose, and a roll of paper towel outside. Put on old clothes, and gloves and then the suit. If your hands are exposed, wear gloves that you can throw away when you are done. Make sure your face and eyes are also covered by something protective that you can also throw away. Now, carefully inwind the poison ivy from the Lilac branches. Using extreme care not to touch your face or any part of your skin, carefully and thoroughly remove the roots of the poison ivy. It comes up pretty easy. Place all of the plant and roots in a garbage bag, and then place that garbage bag into another garbage bag. Take great pains to not get any of the Urushiol (poison ivy toxin) on the second bag. Now remove the hazmet suit and put it in another garbage bag. Finally remove the gloves and any other piece of protective clothing that came into contact with the Urushiol. Use the tecnu to wash your hands. Do not use water. Just rub the technu into your hands and any other skin that might have been exposed, then dab the tecnu off your skin with a paper towel. Put the paper towel into the garbage bag with the hazmet suit. Repeat with the tecnu several times. Then wash your hands in the warm soapy water and rinse with the hose.

With any luck, you will have gotten rid of the poison ivy, you will not have damaged the lillac, and you will not have infected any of your skin with the awful rash.

Poison Ivy Treatment?

I have had poison ivy all over my arms and left leg since earlier this week.

I am using calamine lotion and oatmeal bath, but the blisters are not drying up, and they are weeping

What should I do that I am not doing already

Poison Ivy Treatment?
KEEP doing what you are doing. And buy some benadryl lotion AND benadryl PILLS to help fight the itching from the inside.

and DO NOT NOT NOT scratch them, it makes it much harder to heal.

They will go away over time, but the poison has to run its course first. I had a bad case of it earlier this spring, and I still have a scar that is slowly healing!! But I don't care about that... it was the itching that drove me nuts. Keep up with the oatmeal baths.

OH and switch to any soaps and lotions that are all fragrance free. The chemicals in soaps can make the irritation worse. I used an oatmeal soap in the shower as well, and avoided body lotions and such that might actually irritate it more.
Reply:try Ivy Dry.
Reply:you can make an oatmeal paste (best paste is made with baby-cereal oatmeal) and spread it all over the places, take a benadryl and go to sleep

i have heard of people painting it with clear nail polish, but i believe it would burn and cause it to scar pretty bad
Reply:I'm deathly allergic to poison ivy. just touching it and I'm covered in it. the only thing Ive found to work is this: it might be a little uncomfortable but it works, trust me. water down some bleach and scrub your infected skin and let it soak in the bleach water. the bleach will not only dry up the oils, but it will dry up the sores to help heal. just use moderation and common sense, and it will work.

i have to use this when i get into poison ivy.
Reply:take a baking soda bath.
Reply:This is the only thing that I use. It might mot help the rash but it helps the itch and it goes away. Hot water. The hoter the better. Let the hot water run over as long as you can--a couple of minutes. When you take it out from the hot water--it won't itch-- and it will go away--in time.

Poison ivy cure?

my wife has poison ivy and can't seem to get rid of it. is there a good cure for this?

Poison ivy cure?
• Remove your clothes and shoes and wash them in detergent and hot water.

• As soon as possible, wash all exposed skin with strong soap and water (or just water) to remove the plant's oils.

• Apply cloths soaked in aluminum acetate solution (Burow's solution), then calamine lotion or ointment to reduce the redness, ease the itching, and help dry up the blisters. Or take lukewarm baths with cornstarch (1/2 cup) or colloidal oatmeal added to ease the itching. DO NOT use topical antihistamines.

• Cover any oozing blisters with a clean gauze bandage soaked in a baking soda and water solution.

If the rash spreads to your face, mouth, eyes, or genitals, or if you develop a fever, headache, extreme redness, pus, or other severe symptoms, see your doctor. He or she will recommend one or more of the following:

• applying corticosteroid ointment or cream to the affected areas two to three times a day, gradually reducing to once a day

• taking oral corticosteroids such as prednisone

• taking oral antibiotics or using an antibiotic cream if an infection develops.

Because these are all potent drugs, ask your doctor about any possible side effects or interactions with other drugs you may be taking.
Reply:i had posion ivy a few months ago try lots of calamine lotion and just not scratching it because once it gets on your fingers its everywhere..
Reply:Ivy Dry. It's available at Rite Aid, Walgreens, And CVS.
Reply:Sometimes, if its bad enough, you have to take prednisone to actually get rid of it. Go see your doctor to be sure.
Reply:Aloe Vera worked well for my neighbors kids. They had it bad too.
Reply:wash your clothes with dawn hand soap (not too much or it'll overflow) because it does a decent job of taking it off of the clothes, otherwise the oil can stay there for over a year. and take benadril and put calamine lotion, oatmeal, of soak the afflicted area in chamomile tea. those can help with the itching.. if it's already over most of your body, go to the doctor and get a shot, it's the best thing to do.
Reply:Calamine Lotion dries up a poison ivy rash. I should know...My family use to have a grape vine in our backyard as a child and poison ivy grew literally everywhere around it. I was determined to get to the grapes unconcerned of the irritating itching and rash I would get soon after. Boy did I love grapes...LMAO

Good Luck
Reply:There is a wash called TECNU that you can get at any drug store. It stops the inching and dries it up.
Reply:one of the best over the counter medicans is caladril its calamine and benadril together makes the itching go away

Poison Ivy around the eyes?

I have poison ivy around my eyes and it does itch a lot. My eyes aren't puffy just the skin around them is really red. Should I see a doctor?

Poison Ivy around the eyes?
Just go to the dr and get a shot in your butt...It will be completely gone in like 3 days or if your scared of that get them to give you some pretizone (not sure of SP its a steroid) and that will wipe it out...I wouldn't chance it around my eyes that's for sure...
Reply:yea they give you this thing and they rubb it on the red spot and it stop itchs but its still gonna be red and its still gonna stay there.

Why are they swelling up, I mean, I have been using Caladryl Clear on it, so they shouldn't inflame like this.

Visit a physician if you have a known severe allergy to poison ivy or if you experience severe symptoms. Some people react particularly strongly to poison ivy. For these cases, or if you have a reaction over a large part of your body or on your genitals, a doctor may prescribe an oral corticosteroid, but don’t wait too long, as this treatment is most effective if taken soon after exposure. If you experience a fever, swelling of the mouth and nose, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or tightness in the chest, you should seek emergency medical care.

Avoid scratching. As soon as you find out that you have poison ivy (usually 24-48 hours after you have been exposed to it) you'll start getting a rash and blisters.

Wash as soon as possible with a product to remove the rash causing substance urushiol. Urushiol is a resin-like substance that stubbornly attaches itself to skin in about 10-15 minutes and becomes nearly impossible to get off with soap and water. Tecnu Extreme is a poison oak and ivy scrub that removes urushiol. Just use it at a sink to wash exposed skin or hop in a shower with it and go to town, washing your entire body with it--even areas where the rash hasn't broken out yet.

Apply topical hydrocortisone cream. A strong over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can relieve the itching and swelling associated with poison ivy, particularly if used in the early days of a reaction. Still, make sure you use a product to remove the urushiol before your use hydrocortisone creams. Otherwise the urushiol may still be on the skin and can spread by getting on sheets and towels, or by scratching.

A poison ivy rashApply calamine lotion. As the Coasters said in their immortal song Poison Ivy, "You’re gonna need an ocean / of calamine lotion." Calamine lotion can ease the itching and soothe blistered skin. Apply regularly and liberally. Far advanced over calamine lotions are products that contain diphenhydramine hydracholoride. Look for a product that has an antiseptic in it, too. That will help keep the rash area from being infected. Unfortunately, these types of products only treat the symptom--which is the rash. That's why they should be used after you have used a product to remove the urushiol.

Take a shower with an urushiol removing product. They remove the urushiol so the rash won't spread. If the rash has started, use a urushiol removing product immediately. You may be able to lessen the severity of the rash and dramatically shorten the time it takes to heal.

Apply cool, wet compresses. Moisten a clean washcloth in cool water and apply to skin for several minutes. Re-moisten the cloth as needed to keep it cool. Using cold whole milk instead of water has proven more effective for some people, and an ice compress can relieve particularly nasty swelling or burning.

Take oral antihistamines to help you sleep. Antihistamines, such as Benadryl, generally offer only mild relief from the symptoms of poison ivy, but if taken before bedtime their combination of anti-allergy and drowsiness-inducing effects can help you get some rest.

Contact your doctor for a cortizone shot in extreme cases. Along with other medication your doctor can prescribe, this will alleviate all symptoms within a few days. It will get rid of the itching within just a few hours. Generally, this will relieve all symptoms for a couple of weeks
Reply:ok?
Reply:you might want to go see a doctor.

Poison Ivy help?

Is poison ivy contageous? and what can you do to stop the itching?

Poison Ivy help?
poison ivy can be contagious if you have the oils on your hands and you touch another part of your body or someone elses - it can be anywhere the oils have not been properly washed.

make sure that you wash your bedding

you can use benedryl to help with the itch and a topical ivy cream - if you have it really bad they may put you on steroids.

also in the future when you know you have touched the plant - wash immediately in cold water and soap like dawn or fells naptha.
Reply:poison ivy can spread if you keep scratching it, I would get some benidryl or calinime lotion and put it on, or
Reply:yes it's very contagious, and calamine lotion will help
Reply:I'm not allergic to poison ivy, but I do have overly sensitive skin, and the doctor once told me that an oatmeal bath would be good for me, and it also would help people with poison ivy stop the itching. Take regular oatmeal in the can, and put about a cup into your hot bath water. They also make a lotion now, thats less messy, Its made by aveeno and is called somthing like oatmeal and menthol soothing lotion, they sell it at walmart, by the bengay and stuff. This works wonders for anyone who wants to sooth their painfully itchy skin.

Poison ivy out of control!!!?

I have land that has not been touched in over 20 years and the poison ivy has taken over. (some of it has become the size of trees with leaves as big as dinner plates!) What can I do this winter or over time to gradually halt the growth or at least make it manageable? I live in zone 6.

Poison ivy out of control!!!?
We had this same problem when moving into our new house. The yard had not been attended to and had quite an overgrowth. It took me a few weeks to realize where I was getting my poison ivy rash because the vines were so large I didn't recognize it. The vines of the poison ivy were so big they had to be cut with a saw. However, what really did the trick was Roundup Poison Ivy and Heavy Brush Killer. I soaked the entire vine from top to bottom. It took us 2 or 3 applications to get all of it, but we finally got it. Also, the regular Roundup does not work, it has to be the one for poison ivy and heavy brush.
Reply:hire ppl 2 cut it down and don't water the place until it dies or give the poison ivy poison!
Reply:You may need to call someone in if you don't want to go in and cut it down yourself. If you do it yourself wait until after a few frosts or snow hits, will make it easier to cut . Just remember to wear protective clothing. heavy duty gloves, pants, safety glasses etc...You might have to clear a small area each winter to get it all.
Reply:A Produst put out by Ortheo Called Brush B-Gone however this is the best way in most areas to take care of it.

1) First cut it back either with a Weed Eater line Cutter as close to the ground as possible. Note needs to be recommened in the High 80's to 95 degrees. Then follow Direction on,label for proper useage.

2) Normally this will need to be done at least twice to three times durring the Spring, Summer then one more application, just as Fall time starts.
Reply:buy an Ivy killer at any garden center and start by spraying the roots. do this once really soak the trunks and roots. you can spray the leaves and vines at this time too. then about 2 weeks later spray it down again. wait a few more days then start cutting it down starting at the roots, remove all the debris. Be sure to wear protective covering while doing so even your eyes. And please never burn it, the smoke could irritate you., and from what ive been told could cause you to get poison ivy yourself. even when it is dead you could get poisin ivy from it, so be careful.

Poison ivy near eye?

already been to the doctors and said to use eye drops and benadryl pills and cream and I washed my poison ivy but 3 days late because I didn't know what it was. My eye is going to shut completely soon. Please don't say go to the doctors or er. people don't listen. I don't care if you think I should but i might go to er tomorrow. don't say you definately should. is there any other way. if not and you say go to doctors or er DON'T LEAVE AN ANSWER. i HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION BEFORE BUT THEY SAY DOCTOR OF ER ANYWAY. SHUT UP. please leave good details. thank you. and don't say I have angry issues in any form.

Poison ivy near eye?
The reason people keep telling you that is that there really isn't anything you can do so close to the eye, and it's pretty serious when it starts covering your face like that. The doctor can give you a shot and steroid pills to help lessen your symptoms.

Other than that, take cool showers and try not to scratch. Keep up with the Benadryl. It'll go away soon enough, and there really isn't anything at all that can be done to speed the healing. For the future, keep a bottle of Technu with you when you're in poison ivy infested areas and wash your hands and face with it often. The stuff is a miracle, and just rubbing it on and wiping it off with a piece of cloth works pretty well. I've had really good luck with a product called Domeboro when I've broken out, but it's probably not safe to use near the eyes. My sympathies to you; I just recently got over a rash that covered most of my face, so I know how miserable you must be right now.

Have you been near the woods, tall grass or somewhere your've seen it? I use an over-the-counter product called Oak-N-Ivy Calagel.

Reply:Tea tree oil, olive oil, and toothpaste

NOT mixed, but all those will help a lot

Apple Cider Venigar or raw white venigar
Reply:if it is not so bad that you need a doctor get some stuff from the drug store. technu works really good. it is a 2 part treatment. you can usually find it in a drug store. just follow the directions and try not to scratch it, bc/ it will just relocate it to other parts of your body.
Reply:While it could be a poison plant, it could also be more serious diseases. See a doctor pronto!
Reply:May I suggest you see a doctor, Sir?

You could be risking escalation and a Forum where they cannot see the infection, even if there are qualified doctors here, would not be the ideal place to get an opinion from.

You could end up with unnecessary complications that could prove very costly, both in terms of money and health by your procrastination.

I'd suggest you do that now, Sir.

Poison Ivy.. goin to the beach?

I got a pretty bad case of poison ivy recently so i went to my doctor and he gave me a shot and some presciption medicine along with some sort of cream. The affected areas include my legs and arms with my left ankle and right arm being quite swollen. I was planning on goin to the beach with some friends tomorrow but i wasn't sure if this would have a negative impact on my condition. any thoughts?

Poison Ivy.. goin to the beach?
Salt water is good for all types of skin conditions because it dries out the lesions and cleanses any open sores of bacteria.
Reply:The salt water in the ocean willl help to dry up your poison ivy faster.......go and have fun.
Reply:Poison Ivy is cuased by the oil making an allergic reaction. If anything salt water will lift these oils from your skin. Just be sure to reapply your cream when you get home.

If the poison ivy outbreak starts to show up on other areas of your body, then it's time to see the doctor.

Poison Ivy Cure - Impatiens?

As a child, it used to be my greatest foolish trick - rub a poison ivy leaf on my skin and watch the fear in my friends' eyes - and their utter amazement that I wouldn't ever get the rash.

27 years later, and covered head to toe, I'm apparently making up for lost time.

I've had this for 4 days, and it's beginning to blister. My elbows are so covered in rash, I can't bend them.

I've been to the doctor and got the cortisone shot, which has relieved some of the itching but not the burning pain. He's prescribed methlypredisolone, but it has huge mental side effects, and I'm frankly terrified of taking it. Calamine just seems to irritate my very sensitive skin.

I've heard that impatiens are a good natural remedy. Can you use regular impatiens, or does it have to be the touch-me-nots?

THANKS!

Poison Ivy Cure - Impatiens?
Well, I'd go back to the doctor and tell him your fear and get an alternative medicine. I'm horribly allergic to poison ivy, and I get an old-fashioned prescription--it's called a dose pack--and it's some kind of steroid. You take like 5 tablets the first day, four the next and so forth.

I don't know any home remedies that work. Get well soon.
Reply:Actually, I (quietthunder) voted, not the community. I don't know why it didn't note that! Anyhoo, thanks! Report It

Reply:get steroid shot or pills from doc
Reply:Someone told me, you should put the part in tomato juice for a while.
Reply:Yes, it works!

For a home remedy, try applying the crushed leaves of jewelweed (Impatiens capensis). The beauty of this home remedy is that jewelweed is a common weed in damp areas. This "treatment" may very well be growing right in your own backyard!

Also cool compresses in one form or another are quite soothing. Try using a towel or wash cloth soaked in either plain tap water or Burow's Solution (an astringent solution -- you can make it yourself using Domeboro tablets or powder packets available over-the-counter). This is especially good during the two or three worst days of the rash. Along the same lines, some dermatologists recommend rubbing an ice cube gently over the rash several times a day, then letting the skin air dry. Soaking in a tub, particularly using an oatmeal bath such as Aveeno, can also be very soothing to the itch. Be sure the bath is cool or lukewarm -- but not hot -- as heat tends to make the rash even more inflamed.

Poison Ivy again, 2 months later?

I know it is possible that you can get poison ivy again up to a year after an initial outbreak from clothes that have absorbed the oil, urushiol. But I am pretty sure that I have not gotten it again from clothes. It randomly reappeared on my neck recently, its not that bad and hasn't been spreading, except a small bump on my hand. My main question is is it possible to get it again from oil you may have in your system (or must I have gotten it again from clothes)? which may not make much sense. Otherwise, I have put caladryl on it and it seems fine. Also, I did seem to get some small bumps from it after the major outbreak passed, like on my fingers.

Poison Ivy again, 2 months later?
Go see a doc. They have a shot now that makes it go away faster.
Reply:You realize that the shots are only for really serious cases and this was just a small recurrance of it, and anyway, it is almost gone now, without any treatment. Report It

Reply:Go see a doctor
Reply:Please go to the doctor and have it diagnosed. If it is poison ivy, you have come into contact with the offensive weed again, either directly or on your clothing. The urushiol oil that many people react to tends to be difficult to remove from clothing. Wash in hot water several times! If that is not an option, discard the clothing.

Poison Ivy.. My dog must have gotten it on him.. i rubbed him and voila...?

it's in little spots ALL over the place, including face.

Anything better or FASTER than calamine lotion?

Also, the dog... do you think regular soap will get the poison ivy oil off his fur?

Poison Ivy.. My dog must have gotten it on him.. i rubbed him and voila...?
Poison Ivy is in the powder on the plant. Yes, washing your dog will help, but wear rubber gloves of course. He may have caught it too so check him for itching etc. Calamine is good - if it is more severe you can make a paste of oatmeat and then use gauze to keep it on. Above all do not scratch as that is what spreads it.

i got it from my dog because she ran in it and then scratched me, it has happenend several times before.

usualy i use rubbing achol(however it is spelled) but it is on my lip, and i'm not sure what i can put on it.

I havn't been scratching it, and i don't plan to. usualy i get rid of it by drying it out, so thats what i'm doing. if it doesn't get better by the weekend, i will try to go to the doctor.

I play the french horn, and it isn't too easey to play like this, lucklly it is summer, so i don't have anything to work on. But the longer i go without playing, the harder it is to play again.

POISON IVY ON LIP! help!!!!?
I had the same problem last week!!! It's awful! I was exposed to poison ivy (and didn't know it) on a Monday afternoon, and then next morning I could feel a few small red bumps on my chin. I thought it was just a skin reaction, bug bites or zits. The next morning I woke up with it all over my face, (especially on my chin and lips). I went to the dr and got a shot of a steroid (pregnizone) and a prescription for it. Unfortunately, that didn't help too much. It began to spread to my hands, arms, legs and stomach. I was miserable. I bought ivydry, caltaid, Zanfel, calamine lotion.... The Zanfel would seem to work a little- it would relieve the itch and start to heal the area- but it just kept spreading. With Zanfel costing $40 a small tube, and the poison ivy getting worse, I went back to the dr. I told him all I had been doing (even changing sheets everyday and that kind of stuff) and he said I have a bad case of it and he was going to give me another shot of a different steroid. That night, I felt a huge difference! The itching had almost completely stopped and I was able to sleep through the night. It is now 2 days later and the poison ivy is just about gone.

If your poison ivy is spreading and really uncomfortable, I recommend going to the dr. If I hasn't done that a few days ago, I would still be in agony. Good luck!
Reply:There is this cleaner called Technu. You can find it in most pharmacies or Walmart or Target, etc. It is specifically for poison ivy. It washes out the poisonous oils so the poison ivy dries up and won't spread. Just follow the directions on the bottle. It's also great if you know you've been exposed to poison ivy because if you wash with it before it shows up too, it will stop it from coming. Good luck.
Reply:Ouch! See your doctor...and oh-don't kiss anyone!

Poison ivy on face!?

Today is homecoming for me and I have poison ivy on my face! it has caused my eyes to swell up. is there anything I can do to make the swelling of my eyes go away??

I have tried the spoon in the freezer, the hairdryer, the ice, the cold tea bags, the hot tea bags, bleach, and multiple showers.

I need to get rid of the swelling by 7 tonight.

Poison ivy on face!?
Benadryl or some other anti histamine is all that will work. You are having an allergic reaction. Sucks I know. Out here it is poison oak and just walking past it with a breeze will get me.

Poison ivy: is it almost over?

I got poison ivy last Saturday and a few nights ago the itching was intense. Now the itching isn't as bad, its more just oozing and gross. Does this mean its getting better? and if it does how long do you think until it starts clearing up?

Poison ivy: is it almost over?
poison ivy usually takes 10 to 14 days to completely get out of your body if your treating it. try buying this lotion stuff called Ivy rest. you can buy it at any drug store and probably even walmart. put on any spot that you have poison ivy. they also have pills that you can take for controlling the itching of poison ivy and you can even try going to your doctor and getting a shot. I've heard that the shot really works. after getting the shot, your poison ivy is gone in like 48 hours.

Poison ivy motives?

I've been wondering poison ivy's motives for attacking mankind is to protect and save plants but when battling batman and batgirl her plants get destroyed or damaged it seems the amount of protection she does gets outweighed by the amount of plants that get destroyed so why is it that she uses plants if she knows they may get killed?

Poison ivy motives?
Because like most of Batman's foes she is not all there in her mind. This is why she like many of them goes to Arkham Assylum not jail when she is captured. She is not in her right mind.

Ok poison ivy oak and sumac which cured me the most???

i stay in the woods and just really found out that you can contact poison ivy sumac and poison oak,, even in the winter when the plant has died off, but recently got a bad outbrake of sumac from cutting firewood and as the vine was not on the tree there were still dean vines growin all over the tre i guess it had been sumac well ater touching it while splitting and loading the fireplace i contacted it badly,,,so heres what i did i washed the areas with dawn dish washing liquid and then put and anti perspirant on it to help dry it up. i also took a hair dryer and got the affected area very hot,,, its like an or ga sm in your arm very strong euphoria eeling,,, so wich of these things helped me the most as it has dried up really fast this time...

Ok poison ivy oak and sumac which cured me the most???
From what I understand, washing the area immediately is the best thing you can do when you are exposed to poison ivy and poison oak. Therefore, that's likely what limited the severity of your reaction. You washed off the offending irritant. Good quick thinking!
Reply:I have never heard of anybody using dawn,anti-perspirant or a hair dryer before. My sister is very allergic to poison ivy and she washes the infected area too with plain ole soap. Then she uses vicks vapo rub and says that clears it up real fast with no itching. I would think her way is less painful.
Reply:Not sure which worked, or if it would work on someone else. But hey if it works keep with it. Sure beats the heck out of the oatmeal baths and calmine lotion.

Poison ivy EMERGENCY! It's on my face, what can I do?!?

Okay, so i ran into a limb in the woods that had poison ivy on it. It starts from between my eyes, then spreads to me right cheek closest to my nose. So the rash part has spread to my eye and there's literally like a bubble beneath my eye and my whole eye is half way shut because of this bubble. My mom is a nurse and says it's body fluid, but i'm on medicine for it and i took a shot and it hasn't gone down any. is there any thing i can do to make it go down? :(

Poison ivy EMERGENCY! It's on my face, what can I do?!?
You can't "cure" poison Ivy or poison oak. You can only get meds that will offer some relief. We have poison oak here on the West Coast and we plan on 10 days for it to run its' course.

Poison ivy on lip!!! help!!!?
i had this happen to me last summer. use caladryl you can buy it at wal-mart and put it on at least six times a day (that'll dry it out). after you're done putting it on wash your hands with dish liquid so that you aren't spreading the posion ivy all over. if it doesn't go away within like 5 or 6 days go see a doctor. good luck! oh and drink your drinks through straws!
Reply:what ever you do don't like your lips you have to see a doctor right away it could cause infections.... anywhere basically when you eat it could touch you lip and you swallow it and especially when you drink you need to go to a doctor right away.
Reply:mix some baking soda, oatmeal, and water (equal parts) til pasty and pat it on.Keep it coated well and it should clear in about 3 days.
Reply:IvyDry is sold at Walgreens and most pharmacies...also at WalMart, I believe. This stuff will dry it up really fast and relives the itch. You might also try hydrocortisone cream as it is also drying and itch relieving
Reply:go see a doctor and Put some ice on it to keep it from swelling

Poison ivy? help identify?

Can you look at these photos and tell me which one is poison ivy?

Poison ivy? help identify?
It looks like pictures two and four could both possibly be poison ivy. You can go poison-ivy.org and compare photos and get more info. Poison Ivy always has three leaves and is not symetrical. Whatever you do, don't cut it out with a chainsaw, mower or weedeater. I'm still paying for that mistake! You'll need to use poison ivy killer and let it work for at least 24-48 hours to kill the roots, then in biohazard fashion, remove the dead top growth. The uroshoil (sp?) of anything it touches (including pet hair) can remain active for a year or longer.
Reply:looks like 1242 1245 is.
Reply:# 2 and #4 are poison ivy. There's some in #1 too. #3 and #5 are something else.
Reply:Leaves of three, let it be.
Reply:Two of them are, the second one and the fourth one. You can get sprays to kill them. Once they are dead, just leave them there and if you want to burn them, don't, that will screw you eyes and nose up pretty bad.

You might do yourself a favor when spraying them and put about a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent - like Palmolive, to cut through a wax that would be on the strongest leaves. That will allow the spray to work better.

I just got poison ivy all over my face. I need something that can dry it out and not cause much damage to my face.

Thanks for the help!

Poison ivy treatment??????
If it is bad or near your eyes or mouth you should get a shot from a doctor which will help a lot. You can take Benadryl to reduce the allergic reaction and use over the counter creams with cortisone. There are some specially formulated with anti itch additions for poison ivy, Ask your druggist which one works best.
Reply:Maximum strength Cortizone 10. the creme w/aloe, not ointment.
Reply:Calomine lotion. See adoctor if it gets worse and try not to scratch it. Lanacaine might help for the itch. Important not to scratch.

Poison Ivy Rash?

How long does it take to recover from the poison ivy rash normally?

Poison Ivy Rash?
Alot depends on how bad you got it and all, however 2 weeks is a good range. Remember to wash everything that you may have come in contact with...including shoes. If the oil from the plant is still around, you can keep re-infecting yourself. Don't itch it, benadryl, claritin or the like will help. Also another Antihistamine may help as well, they are normally for acid reflux, but are used in the ER...called Zantac, etc...these are H2 blockers. Topical cream like Hydrocortisone is good also. Calamine doesnt really do much, but if you like it you can use it. If none of this helps, go to the doctor, you may need a course of steroids to reduce the inflammation. Good Luck!!
Reply:Up to a week.

Poison Ivy ???? PLEASE HELP?

Are there any home remdies for poison ivy/oak/sumac/???

I really need help, I have it on my neck, legs and arms please respond ASAP!!!! With descriptive answers!!!

Poison Ivy ???? PLEASE HELP?
The only thing you can do is:

1-Wash the area thoroughly with soapy water. This removes the oils which are causing the reaction, and prevents further spread of it.

2-apply a topical antihistimine (anti-itch) cream/ointment... use the 2% cream, it's twice as effective as the 1% cream. This eases the external itching.

3-start taking an antihistimine orally (Benedryl, etc). This will help ease the allergic reaction internally.

These other "home remedies" are folklore.
Reply:This is going to sting like hell, but it works. Stand naked in the bathtub or shower and pour bleach on the effected areas. As I said, you'll cuss up a storm, but it will in fact kill it.
Reply:rubbing alcohol it burns bad but drys the oil up good,. worked for my hubby in the past
Reply:Its not a home remedy, but a purchased one, but I swear by a product called Technu. Available at most major drug stores.
Reply:A good medium-term recipe from my hillbilly relatives is to take the bark from a wild cherry tree, boil it up, and make it into a tea.

It tastes horrible, no matter how much sugar you put in it... But you know what? I used to get poison ivy so bad it swelled my eyes shut, but after drinking this horrid concoction for about a week and a half, I never got poison ivy again!
Reply:Yes I do my daughter use to get poison ivy bad. we would make a paste of corn starch and vinegar and spread in on like Calamine lotion(the pink stuff.) I will dry like the pink stuff and releave the itching. You will also have to do Benadryl and antihistamine to control the itching. Keep your bedding and clothes clean as this spreads for easy.
